KS8041 Magnesium Crystal Model
Overview
This structure is a typical example of hexagonal close-packing. The unit cell is a parallelepiped with two axes which enclose an angle of 120�. The structure has one atom in each corner of the unit cell and one atom inside it. The atom inside the cell is in the center of one of the two equilateral prisms into which the cell can be divided.
The atoms in the corners and those in the centers form a simple, hexagonal space lattice, with each atom having 12 equidistant neighbors. If atoms are visualized as extending until they touch each other, it becomes apparent that this is a close-packed structure. Other elements which have similar structure are: Be, Zn, Cd, Ti, Zr, Hf, Co-alpha, Ru, Os.
